Fowey

The town of Fowey (pronounced Foy) is situated on the estuary of the River Fowey and was already a port when the Romans arrived. Attempts on its destruction by the French in the 12th century and again by the Spanish a century later, were unsuccessful.

Today, the town's natural harbour is a haven for visiting yachtsmen while Fowey is still a major port for the exportation of Cornish China Clay.

Writer Daphne du Maurier and her family often holidayed in Cornwall and in 1926 they took a second home in Fowey, where Daphne penned her first novel 'The Loving Spirit'. Each year in May the town celebrates her work with the Daphne du Maurier Festival.

The town centre offers a range of individual shops and galleries, many of which showcase local works. Restaurants and small cafes offer everything from a quick cup of coffee to gourmet meals.

The Tourist Information Centre in South Street stocks a range of books and maps and staff are also able to book boat trips and arrange guided walks.
