Redruth
For details of places to stay and things to do in Redruth, Cornwall, please try the links on the left.
THE origins of the town of Redruth date back to the 12th century. It lies at the heart of the former mining industries and the disused mine buildings in the area are evidence of this; look for stone built engine houses with their tall chimneys that still preside over the landscape.
The name Redruth is said to have come from the fact that the stream was so discoloured with iron oxide that it ran red.
The Tourist Information Centre, an extension to the information and resources in the Cornish Studies Library, is open between May and September and is staffed, full-time, by a tourism officer.
It provides numerous tourist leaflets for attractions throughout Cornwall but with particular emphasis on the more local ones. A series of walking trail leaflets are also available, including three for Redruth.
