Newlyn is the heart of the Cornish fishing industry, a busy, modern port that is still one of the most successful in England. Newlyn supports over one hundred boats of all types that supply its lively market with a variety of fish.
Beyond the historic quays and the colourful bustle of the harbour lie narrow cobbled lanes and surviving fragments of the historic fishing village that inspired the Victorian Newlyn 'School' of painting. A fascinating glimpse of Newlyn's past can be had at the fishing exhibition at Newlyn's Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen building, at the entrance to the North Quay.
Newlyn's artistic tradition is maintained by the Newlyn Art Gallery which stages national and international contemporary exhibitions and also displays the general work of accomplished local artists. At Penlee House Art Gallery and Museum in Penzance there is a fine collection of Newlyn School paintings.
